HEAVY SNOW FOLLOWED BY A COLD WAVE PREPARE MEASURE’S FOR COLD WEATHER, HEATING, AND NO-SHOWS

As strong cold weather began following heavy snowfall last weekend, the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee began preparing countermeasures .The organizing committee announced on the 22nd that in preparation for the cold wave, the shift work hours of operating personnel for each match venue were shortened .In addition, volunteers and game staff were provided with winter supplies such as jackets, heated pants, gloves, hats, knee blankets, and winter shoes. Considering the number of spectators visiting the stadium in the bitter cold, heated buses will be operated and warm drinks will be provided at snow-based stadiums such as the sliding center. A heated tent rest area was also installed for visitors to the stadium and festival site.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that a cold wave would prevail on the 23rd, with morning temperatures in Gangwon’s inland and mountainous regions falling below -15 degrees Celsius and the east coast’s temperatures falling below -10 degrees Celsius. Currently, a cold wave warning has been issued for the inland and mountainous areas of the province, and a cold wave advisory has been issued for the east coast. A strong wind advisory is in effect on the east coast, with winds blowing over 15 meters per second, and a heavy snow advisory is in effect in Pyeongchang, Hoengseong, and the central mountainous areas of the province .The organizing committee expanded on-site ticketing starting today, taking into account the fact that many people were unable to attend the event even after reserving tickets for the game due to heavy snowfall.
